West Lafayette City Elections 2019
Here are my six "take-aways" from the 2019 West Lafayette city election:
1) Steve Durbin, you were right; we could have won every seat.
I thought that was optimistic. Maybe a gain of seat of a seat (Shannon Kang) or two (Kathy Parker). But James Blanco’s election proved you right and me wrong. That Austin Bohlin lost to a far more established candidate frequently on television by only 5 votes means we could have won every West Lafayette city council seat.
2) Campbell/Dullum/Teising showed us the way with the 2018 elections.
State Representative Chris Campbell had 56.7 percent of the vote in a district that includes much of West Lafayette. The Democrats won everything in Wabash Township with Jennifer Teising winning the Trustee race by 2300 votes. Lisa Dullum beat incumbent Republican Vicki Burch in the District #4 Tippecanoe county council race by 2,547 votes.
3) The suburbs are getting bluer. Kathy Parker won District #5
4) Young adults are bluer. Shannon Kang won District #3, the all Purdue student district.
5) John Dennis, with 76% of the vote, is a very good, a very popular, mayor. The “D’s” are doing well, but not well enough to unseat an incumbent who feels like one of us. I’m glad we didin’t try.
6) 46,269 people live in West Lafayette. 20,960 are registered. 3,129 voted. 14.9% of registered voters. 6.7% of the city’s population. Sigh.
Thanks to everyone who made an 8-1 Democratic city council majority possible.
